It’s fall! While everyone is high on pumpkin spice, I’m high on the idea of fall crafting. Having a child sometimes limits you on the activities you used to love that you can continue to do. Fortunately, crafting is not one of those limiting activities. Give a child the opportunity to use scissors, glitter and glue and they will never turn you down. While not all attention spans are created equally, I usually find time to work on whatever projects I’m interested in at the moment while my young daughter is dumping pink and purple glitter all over a piece of paper… or floor. Lately, I’ve been a bit obsessed with what I can create out of doodles. Everyone doodles, right? Maybe not so much anymore now that less and less paper is being used daily; this is a good thing of course! But, for those lucky enough to find a scrap of paper, I hope you doodle. I have especially been drawn (pun intended) to doodling on ceramics with sharpies. Now, not having a lot of time to run down the aisle of my local craft store with an impatient child in a shopping cart, I still managed to grab a few sharpies. Finding the right ceramics was a different story. In an online ad, I found ceramics on clearance. Unfortunately, my local store did not have these clearance items. I think this was fate, however. I was determined to grab any ceramic I could find so as to not let go of this crafting urge. Because of this determination, I grabbed two candlesticks that were made of unfinished ceramic. After I got home, made dinner, filled my daughter’s juice cup 10 times, and inhaled my own dinner, I was able to spend a few moments doodling. I was hooked. The first design I decided on was a geometric design in purple. The curves of the candlestick holders made some of the progress slow but I found the sharpies to be forgiving of my unsure beginnings. Once my daughter saw I was doing something for myself, it was game over. But at least I had a beginning! Over the next few days, I doodled whenever I could. I also googled sharpie doodles on the internet. I found that most blogs/pins/etc. would indicate that sharpie paint markers worked better on ceramic. I realized my fateful decision to purchase unfinished ceramics actually worked in my favor. Regular sharpies worked perfectly fine on unfinished ceramic. Fixing mistakes was a bit trickier but, otherwise, the going was easy. A few weeks later (did I mention I had a daughter) I was finally able to add ModPodge to the candlestick holder for a finished look. The picture below is my final result! I enjoyed the process so much that I made another candlestick holder. Here’s hoping that you too can distract your child long enough to get your craft on!
